Look What Was In The Chicken House This Morning
Christmas is less than 8 weeks away! Do you have your shopping done?  With that said, today in South Central KY the wind is howling and the rain is falling while the trees are being striped of their leaves. It is Halloween, and I am betting that the ghosts and goblins will be scarce tonight. By the way, my 25 Buff Orpington chickens will be 5 months old tomorrow, and as you can see by the picture I have posted, one hen is already laying. Isn't that precious.

Roosters Rock

Roosters protect your hens. The rooster keeps a watchful eye out and warns of imminent danger. Roosters are beautiful. The long showy feathers and general strut of the rooster adds something special to your flock. Part of their social role is to make sure the flock gets plenty of good food. Hens need lots of nutrition to produce their eggs, but roosters don't need to eat as much since they're not expected to lay eggs. Roosters dance to impress hens, it's courtly. I love my two roosters!

Saturdays Pumpkin Carving
Every year I have everyone over to do a little pre Halloween pumpkin carving with a bonfire and dinner. The first step is hollowing out the pumpkin. Looks like Alex is on the job.  This year the day started out with sunshine soon fading, and windy breezes prevailing. No fires this year, but pumpkin carving was great. Seven in all and an abundance of pumpkin seeds to bake and pumpkin goo for the chickens to peck on. We finished with vegetarian chili and  pea salad with a blueberry cream cheese pound cake. YUM!

Why You Should Avoid Taking The Seasonal Flu Vaccine
As you likely have already noticed, it is pretty difficult to go out anywhere in public these days and not come across various signs and billboards with phrases like" Get the shot, not the flu." And yet, no matter how aggressively the vaccine industry tries to push the flu vaccine on the public, it will always remain an unproven, fear driven scam that offers measurable health benefits. Besides their ineffectiveness, flu shots also came with an array of potentially deadly side effect that health authorities rarely disclose to the public. Such side effects include things like brain damage, dementia, toxic mercury and even flu like symptoms which defeats the point of even getting a flu shot in the first place. I don't trust the government to take care of me, what about you?

Want Healthy Birds? Give Them Fresh Air!

First we have to understand that our animals are healthiest when we give them conditions that allow them to express their natural instincts, and which imitate their natural environment as much as possible. Chickens need to scratch, moving around all day in search of food. Chickens like to get up off the ground and perch. They need to dust bathe to keep insects off their bodies and remove dry skin. For bedding I use straw. The chickens love to forage thru it, and I put scratch down so they can find these little nuggets mixed in the straw. I keep my small door in the front of my chicken house open with a heat lamp on during the winter. Give them fresh air, loaded with oxygen, and a place to scratch and their bodies will become warm.

Feed Your Backyard Chickens

I have 29 chickens and it can get quite expensive to feed them. They all have a healthy appetite. But did you know that many common garden weeds make excellent feed for chickens and that these weeds are probably growing right now for free in your garden or yard? The chickens think dandelions, pulled up with their long tentacles and all, are the best food on earth. I'm more than happy to let them convert my weeds into even better homegrown eggs for me.  How about you!

Are Americans Just Lazy?
Americans work 137 more hours per year than Japanese workers, 260 more hours per year than British workers, and 499 more hours per year than French workers. One way to look at that dramatic increase, says the 2010 analysis, is that it should only take one quarter the work hours, or 11 hours per week, to afford the same standard of living as a worker in 1950 (or our standard of living should be four times higher). Is that the case? Obviously not. Someone is profiting. It's just not the average American worker. Or is modern life tearing apart our health? As our lives have gotten busier, our eating habits have suffered. Our personal lives have suffered, and our children's lives have suffered.  Yes America is hyper-productive. But is our hyper-productivity tearing us apart?

Bee Thinking About

The summer was a busy time for your bees. Now it is October. Enough food? And what is enough? While there are a variety of gadgets to weigh a hive, David lifts mine to see how heavy the hive is. Forty pounds is what I have always heard. That will take them through the winter. Get your entrance reducers on to keep mice out of the hives. Make sure all of your hives have heavy bricks on them to keep winter winds from blowing the covers off. Of course I don't feed or treat my hives so they are on their own. Nature will take care of that. Now I am hoping for a mild winter and seeing those bees buzzing about in early spring.

Family -

A Half Hour Can Make A Big Difference!

One of the most common phrases used by people today is, I don't have time. I find myself saying this all the time. We don't have time to do the things we want to do. We don't have enough time to play with the kids. Our spouses go unnoticed too many times because we don't have the time to make the best of our marriages. Surely in twenty four hours, we have at least a half hour to spare. We could cuddle on the couch with the hubby, wife, kids or grandkids and read a good book. We could take a walk and invite our spouse to go with us and the time together could prove to be invaluable. I think with texting, emailing, and the internet we are not having those well meaningful relationships anymore. I challenge you to call someone and ask them out for coffee, or lunch. Lets have more meaningful relationships.

Stopping The Craziness And Chaos In America

What's going on in America? From the government shutdown to violence in DC perpetuated by out of control citizens, we seem to be moving toward chaos. America is losing the common set of values for which our Founders risked and sacrificed their lives. Many Americans today have little or no idea about them. If America does not begin to educate and encourage the people to admire and pursue their Founding values, it will not flourish. Eventually it will decay. If the seemingly growing chaotic and out of control behavior has an ultimate cause, it is the collapse of basic American values.

Revolved Head to Knee Pose - Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana
Revolved Head To Knee Pose

Begin in a seated wide legged straddle. Bend your right knee and bring the sole of your right foot to the inner left thigh. Lean your torso over to the left, bringing the back of your left forearm to the floor inside your left leg. If that is not possible, bring your arm to your shin. Begin to twist your torso away from the left leg, opening your chest to the right. Bring the gaze upward, letting the head and neck follow the twist in the spine, but do not over rotate the neck. Raise the right arm overhead and let the right biceps come over the right ear. After several breaths, come back up to sit and switch the position of your legs for a twist to the other side.

Jennifer And I Getting Dinner Together
The Pool At Sunset

We are back from the beach, and what a wonderful time we had. All you can eat shrimp at Floyds in Fort Walton was awesome. The restaurant was located right on the beach just steps away from our condo. We had perfect weather. Not too hot, yet not too cool, with a perfect breeze. We are already talking about next years trip. I think The Cayman Islands sound good.

Heron Pose - Krounchasana
Hero Yoga Pose

Begin in staff pose. Bring the left leg into hero pose, taking care to keep the left foot pointing straight back and the knee hugging the midline. Bend the right knee and bring the right foot to the floor close to your right sit bone. Lift the right foot and hold onto it with both hands. Lean the torso back slightly and shoulder blades onto your back and the arms into the shoulder sockets. Slowly straighten the right leg to about a 45-degree angle. Hold five to ten breaths and then repeat on the other side.

What Do We Have Here?

Its been a couple of months since I have seen the lost hen. The story goes as follows; I was at a friends house one day, and we went visiting her neighbor, who has a variety of chickens. They are wild and fancy free. So we are up on the porch drinking a tall one, when I say to Jim Bo, hey, how would you like it if I took one of your hens home. She was laying on a clutch of 22 eggs. Well he said; I reckon it would be ok. Now to catch her and bring her home. Jim got a sack and put her in. I put the eggs in a cage I had in the car. When I got home, I put the eggs in the nest in the chicken house. It was now or never, so I took her out of the sack. Goodness, she tried to fly up to the nest, but was so excited that she completely flew out of the hen house and yard. I tried to catch her, but you see she is wild and free. I see her now and then. She is still around. I have no idea where she resides or gets her food. Needless to say her potential chicks did not hatch. Maybe she will come closer and be a part of the flock. That is what I am hoping for. For now she is just happy to be around.
