Fever, Cough, Headache, Fatigue, Vomiting
Add to that list laryngitis. I am soaking in pure luxury. My daughter let me use some of her bath salts and body ache reliever. The flu has caught us. The whole family. Lock, stock and barrel. Here is an interesting statistic. During a regular flu season, about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older.
Isn't that exciting to know?

For now, let me just state that what people are suggesting is the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches. Trusting God is not about sitting back and doing nothing. In the Scriptures, we are told that faith is about stepping out and taking action on what God has revealed to us. That includes working hard, being wise and providing for our families. For example, just check out Proverbs 6:6-11...

Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise. Which, having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

How long will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep -- so will your poverty come upon you like a stalker, and your need as an armed man.

In the end, each one of us needs to make the decisions that we feel are best for our own families.

Peace On Earth, Good Will To All People
If only saying it were enough. If only we could say a prayer, or wave a magic wand and peace would descend among all people. Wouldn't that really be the very best Christmas present anyone could have?
This beautiful poinsettia was given to me by my daughter. isn't it a beauty! Thanks Jennifer.

A Dressed Up Chicken Coop
Christmas is about so many things to so many people: the birth of Christ, carols, presents, good deeds, lights, trees, the fat man in the red suit. My mom would make coffee tins of cookies. Starting weeks before Christmas. Miniature pecan pies and wedding cookies. The house smelled wonderful with the aromas of vanilla and cookie dough. As a kid, I was absolutely certain I was taking my own life into my hands every time I would eat raw cookie dough. My mom did a very thorough job of scaring me silly about the life-threatening dangers of raw eggs. Sad to say, it didn't stop me from pinching off bits of dough when she wasn't looking. However, as I have learned more about food production and fresh foods, my fear of raw eggs has decreased significantly. Especially if said eggs come from healthy pastured chickens like the ones I raise. As a matter of fact, I have several of my customers who eat my eggs raw. I am not there yet! How about you?

I just Love this! Don't you?Dont care

I am home, but not for long. I am leaving again for Cincinnati Monday, so I am posting a piece from my bees, to all of you who are interested in keeping, or following the adventures and life of the bee.

While each colony of bees is almost at their lowest head count, with all the boys kicked out and the girls focused on protecting the queen through the coldest months. They are still attracting loads of attention as the general public are becoming more aware of their plight. Fortunately, as we keep our bees in an urban environment, they don't face the challenges of mono-crop agriculture and doses of pesticides. More and more people are becoming fascinated by these tiny creatures. And they are to be watched!

Turkey Run
Thanksgiving morning David walked the 5K and came in first place in his age group. Jennifer ran the 5K and came in first place in her age group. Way to go guys.

I always work at the water stations at the BG Marathon in November. These were the gifts. Our water station won 1st place for being the best. A back pack was in order. A t-shirt for just handing out water.Next year I am going to walk the 13.1 miles.

Jennifer and Micah At Our Home On Thanksgiving Day

If you are someone who believes in personal charity, and who likes to make sure that as many homeless people as possible get a decent meal each day, good for you. But you might want to avoid Fort Lauderdale, Florida, because you could wind up with a hefty fine and some jail time. A group of bozos on the city council recently approved a measure making the sharing of food a citable offence. Hello! "The whole world is Watching."

Broody Hen In The Winter
Bessie is setting! Monday she started her 21 days of setting on a clutch of eggs. Bessie loves being a mother, and she is good at it. The problem is; its November 26th. I do have a warm hen house, but not tropical. I don't know, the chicks take at least 5-6 weeks to fully feather. And with severe temperatures right around the corner I fear for their lives. Some broody hens will not eat, or get water. And in cold temps, this does not bode well for survival. What should I do?   To set or not to set. That is the question.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Be Thankful - Author is Unknown

Be thankful that you do not already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you do not know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you the opportunity for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes.  They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you are tired and weary, because it means you made a difference.

It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.

Do Laying Hens Lay All Year?
Many newbie chicken keepers will wonder if they can gather eggs from their hens all year. The good news is, with proper conditions, your hens are capable of laying eggs in the winter. There are a few things to take into consideration if you would like fresh eggs year round. Chickens, like most birds, normally would not lay eggs all year. But you can trick their bodies into thinking it's summer by keeping a bright light in their coop in the winter. I have 2 lights in mine. A heat lamp and a red bulb. Hens need approximately 15 hours of light each day to keep their reproductive system active.

Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving has snuck up on us once again this year and since it is next week, I thought I would mention our buzzing friends. You see, one third of our food is made possible by insect pollinated crops and these hard working ladies are responsible for about 80% of the pollination. And if that isn't enough, honey bees travel more than 55,000 miles just to bring one pound of honey to consumers. Now that hard work is something to be thankful for! From the ham to the pecan pie, the honey bee and their scrumptious honey have you covered! Enjoy this time with your family, and reflect on the fact that sometimes, its the littlest things we are thankful for.

Give Thanks For Cherished Memories And Many Blessings
Well, the leaves have fallen from the trees, and we find ourselves talking about and planning yet another Thanksgiving. Even though Thanksgiving is packed in the part of the season when decorating and shopping are on my mind, there seems to be downtime around Thanksgiving that is open for having family fun. Amid all the excitement and organizing, we are constantly reminded of celebrations of the past and reflect back on the many blessings of each year.

Learning Is As Natural As Breathing
Only a few children in school ever become good at learning in the way we try to make them learn. I think every child learns differently. Boys need not be pent up in a classroom setting. Most children get humiliated, frightened and discouraged. They use their minds, not to learn, but to get out of doing the things we tell them to do, to make them learn.  My husband has been homeschooling the two younger grandchildren, and both are significantly ahead of their peers.

How Many Eggs Does A Chicken Lay Per Day?
If you are thinking about getting chickens, you might be wondering how many eggs they will give you every day. This is a good question, and the truth is, it varies! It depends on several factors such as: the time of year, the age of the hen. whether you have light in your chicken coop etc. There are many people who end up with 15 eggs per day from 15 hens, or even sometimes 16 per day from 15 birds. If you have this kind of luck GREAT! But it won't last forever. Because as the hen ages the eggs will diminish.  Do you have chickens? How many eggs do they lay per day?

Tis The Season To Give Thanks
Have you noticed in the stores that there is any sign of Thanksgiving. Oh, there are plates, napkins tablecloths and such. But the real idea of giving thanks has been forgotten. I am shocked and amazed at the way people behave today. It is all about them. November is the time when many of us begin reflecting. We reflect on the year that is about to come to a close. We reminisce about the changes, good and bad, that have occurred. We think about the people who have come in and out of our lives. And, we thank God for what He  has done for us. And what He is about to do in our lives.

Yes And Yes
I am on this nutrition kick. I guess its because I an attending a fitness class where we discuss what is good and what is not so good to eat. Ideally, all of the nutrition we need can come from the food we eat. Unfortunately, in todays world, it usually doesn't. Even if food was grown in nutrient dense soil without contaminates, much of the nutrition is lost in its journey from the field to our table. If your diet consists of a wide variety of nutrient dense, organic whole foods, with lots of raw produce, locally grown (preferably in your backyard) and your digestive system is working at peak performance, then you have little use for supplements. That's a lot of ifs. Avoid processed foods and do not eat anything with artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, trans fats or GMO's. A full 80% of your diet should consist of fresh, raw, organic produce, more veggies than fruit. If this is not possible, then I suggest vitamins and probiotics to supplement your diet.

A snapshot of Micah
Most people over spend on food simply because there are too many options at the grocery store. Think about what our ancestors ate. They kept it simple, because they didn't have a lot to choose from. If we take a page from history and limit our dining options as our grand parents probably did, then we will end up healthier and be able to save a lot of money in the process.

Don't Give Up!!!
Processed foods are manufactured to create cravings. You aren't imagining those cravings and you don't have a lack of will power. The odds are truly stacked against you with processed foods. Is eating processed food really cheaper? You need to eat almost double the amount of processed food to feel truly full. Focus on one meal at a time. Remember, you can never fail at eating . Its just not something that can physical happen, unless you somehow stick your spoonful of soup into your nose instead of in your mouth. There is no failure in food. There are only choices that benefit you and choices that don't.

I Made The Newspaper
First of all, it is good to be back. Monday, I left for Cincinnati to visit our son, his wife and baby Micah. I came home early this afternoon, and am trying to catch up. David was great about keeping the house straight. The picture above shows a group of us ladies handing out water to runners during bg26.2 & Half Marathon this past Sunday. I am the one who has the orange ear warmer on. It was quite chilly that morning. With temperatures in the upper 20's. This is my second year for volunteering. The runners really are appreciative of our work.
The holidays are coming sooo fast! Yikes! Reconnect with nature and improve your relationships with forgiveness and gratitude.

Dotted Trees
How To Prep Your Garden For Winter
The greens, includes anything that is still alive-green leaves, kitchen scraps, fresh grass clippings, etc.
The browns, are dry dead material like straw, bean pods, etc. I use good old chicken manure. It is free and works magic. Whether you tend to your compost pile through the winter or not, you are going to get something from it in the Spring.
