Back To School
Whether their summer was jam packed with activities or filled with complaints about being bored with nothing to do, kids often have a tough time making the back to school transition. We have 3 going back to school this year. One starting Junior High and the other two a grade higher. My how time flys. Battling the butterflies is normal. I can remember going to school on that first day. I couldn't eat any breakfast. Although I am not a big breakfast person. Fear of the unknow I suppose. I think if you remind the children that everyone feels a little nervous about the first day of school and that it will all become an everyday routine in no time.
Emphasize the positive things about going back to school, such as hanging out with old friends, meeting new classmates, buying cool school supplies, getting involved in band and other activities, and showing off the new duds.
I think maintaining an open channel of communication with the teachers by e-mailing or talking to them throughout the school year to discuss your kids academic strengths as well as weaknesses is very important. Last, but not least ask your children what kind of day they had. I know you will get as I did, a one word answer, but keep trying.
