As mothers, we have so much on our plates and give so much to our
children and the other people in our lives. It often feels impossible to
find the time to nurture or care for ourselves. And yet this is often
(always?) just what we need to do to meet the challenges of life and
motherhood.
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient
Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses
Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is
the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
