David's Frog Painting 125.00

Planting garlic is easy…

Unless you’re 34 weeks pregnant, and then I would equate it to running a marathon.

When to Plant Garlic?

Welllllll, it depends on who you talk to. Some folks recommend planting it during the full moon in September, others shoot for several weeks before the first frost, and some gardeners wait until after the first frost to put their cloves in the ground.

I put my garlic in last week, as a planting time of mid-September to mid-October is recommended for our zone (Zone 5). I also suspect we’ll have our first hard frost in October sometime.

However, it’s best to avoid planting it too early, as garlic needs cold temps for proper root formation.

Let this be our declaration:

I am a person.

I am not a machine, spreadsheet, agenda or résumé.

I have a heartbeat, skin, scars and a soul.

I am a person.

My worth isn’t calculated in efficiencies, results or ladders climbed. I am not the sum of my accomplishments — or the sum of my mistakes. I am not my ambition, energy level, approval rating, mass appeal or worth to the company store. I am not an A-plus or D-minus. I am not a mess or a miscalculation.

I am not a mistake. Rather, I am a miracle. And so are you.

Because I am a person, made of love in the hands of God.

I will be a person today. I will be me. I will resist the urge to believe I’ve got to fight for my piece; God says there’s more than enough to go around.

I will see the best in others and recognize the best in myself.

I will reach for virtue more than trophies, dignity more than stardom. I will choose encouragement over envy. I will rejoice with those who rejoice.

I will stand tall on the inside, even if I’m feeling weak on the outside.

I am a person, a citizen of the Kingdom, where there is unending grace for me. Because I am a person, and I belong to Jesus.

Consumers don't know what to believe!

Because the concerns about the tomato and tryptophan were never publicized, we now find ourselves in the situation that exists today, where people continue to deny that GMOs are dangerous, and the informed have little choice but to grow their own food so that they can be sure of its origins. Perhaps the GE food experiments would have been stopped or at least scrutinized a lot more closely if the FDA had been honest about the concerns raised by its own experts.

It's clear that the development of genetically engineered and modified food has depended on playing fast and loose with the facts since its very inception.

BGHS Concessions
It’s recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated, while it’s not an easy task for most of us to keep up with that. The good news is that you can consume some fresh vegetables and fruits to keep you hydrated this summer, as lots of them are more than 80 percent water. Following are some good choices: Cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, broccoli and watermelon.

Organic honey “is not really the best honey.”  “The best honey you can get is ... from
where you live,”

Oh, what a glorious thing to be,
A healthy grown up busy busy bee;
While away the passing hours
Pinching all the pollen from the cauliflowers.
I'd like to be a busy little bee,
Being just as busy as a bee can be.
Flying around the garden sweetest ever seen,
Taking back the honey to the dear old queen.

 Wax Moths got my first hive. I only have one hive left. I have decided not to replace it.
These moths destroyed my hive within a week.

As we begin our everyday conversations with God asking, “What might I do to bring You joy today?” our spiritual ears start to open. We might discover that some of the smallest events of our day are actually miracles, as we partner with God to love people.

"The oldest 'prescriptions,' found on Babylonian clay tablets, and the hieratic (priestly) writing of ancient Egypt on papyrus is numerous ancient pharmaceutical and medical uses of hundreds of botanicals and foods (eg, olive oil, wine, turpentine, myrrh, opium, castor oil, garlic)."

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of healthcare

"This worldwide botanical cornucopia represents an eclectic collection of the most reliable early medicines that even today serve the ills of the world. The World Health Organization records the fact that 80% of the world's population still relies on botanical medicines.

"Several phytomedicines have advanced to widespread use in modem times and are familiar to all. These include morphine and related derivatives (from opium), colchicine (ftom Autumn crocus), cocaine (from Coca), digitoxin (from Foxglove), vincristine and vinblastine (from the Vinca plant), reserpine (from Indian Snakeroot), etoposide (from Mayapple), and taxol (from Yew).

"Many botanicals remain to be reevaluated as continued folkloric use around the world entices researchers to further scientific study.

"History and science have shown repeatedly that almost all things are cyclical. Once again, we find ourselves in an era of resurgent interest in natural products as medicine.

"Ethnobotany, rain forest depletion of species, and certain limits in advancement using synthetic drugs continuously teach us that nature has and will always provide us with clues on how to develop new medicines."

Inspect Your Hives
  • Use the weed eater and mow around your hives so that the bees can get in and out.
  • After pulling off your supers check your hives to make sure they have laying queens.
  • Provide water for your bees if they do not have a water source.
  • Bees are hanging on the outside of the hives to help keep it cooler inside the hives not much honey coming in so they are just keeping cool.
  • Harvest any fall honey & get it extracted. Any honey that you pull off to extract should be extracted within a few days. In this heat wax moth damage can happen in just a few days. Small hive beetles can also do a great deal of damage to your supers and your honey. Don't pull your honey off until you are ready to extract.
  • Check the moisture in your honey moisture is running very high in some states.
  • Complete a fall inspection for each hive
  • Take an inventory at your bee yards to see what equipment you need to repair or replace over the winter.
  • Get your entrance reducers on towards the end of September to keep mice out of your hives. Check for mice before installing mouse guards. Check your bottom boards for holes big enough for a mouse to go through.
  • Store any frames with drawn comb in paradichlorobenze (moth crystals). Wax moth damage can be devastating to your combs. Store them in a cool ventilated area. Do not store your supers in plastic garbage bags as this acts as an incubator for the wax moth!
  • Update your record book - you won't remember in the spring!
  • Check your hives for stored honey. Most colonies will need 40 - 60 pounds of honey to winter successfully. The top deep super/hive body should be packed full of honey. If it isn't you should feed the bees some syrup. If mixing your own syrup in the fall the mixture should be 2:1 sugar to water by weight. That would be 4 lbs. of sugar to 2 lbs. of boiling water. You can also get high fructose corn syrup. However, you may not use corn syrup or any type of syrup that you purchase at the grocery store. It has things in it that can cause problems with your bees. NEVER feed honey purchased from the grocery store - it can spread American Foulbrood disease to your bees.

Greenfoods are a specialized category of dietary supplements that offer dense nutrient value and lean caloric content. In other words, you pretty much get a broad range of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients without the calories that you would get if you ate enough foods to supply you with the same nutritional value.

Many people opt to simply forego taking an array of vitamins and instead, get their daily nutritional support from this one particular type of supplement.

The rich nutrients in greenfoods offer a powerhouse of nutritional support to the body. The long list of health benefits for both children and adults is astounding.

Health Benefits of Greenfoods

Researchers are continually finding benefits such as:

  • Disease prevention
  • Detoxification
  • Energy production
  • Immune building
  • Tissue and cell repair in the body

These particular nutritional aids are sometimes referred to as superfoods. However, a superfood product is one that is made with a particular green food as its core nutrient and then has many other food extracts combined to produce the ‘superfood.’

Green foods, on the other hand, generally have the one food extract, or at the most, perhaps one or two other additions such as kale for additional value.

Greenfoods and superfoods are not one and the same.
The various types include low cal, nutrient dense food extracts such as barley, wheat grasses, spirulina, and chlorella. Marine algae and grasses like wheat and barley are the most common sources for these nutritional supplements.

1. Practicing gentle yoga can help you to feel better.

Yoga means unity. As you practice gentle yoga all the different parts of you work together.

I like to think of this as my body, mind and emotions, all working together and pulling in the same direction.

Why is this important?

In this fast paced world we live in, there is so much stress all around us.

To really feel good and create a life that is meaningful and purposeful, yoga helps you to take time to quieten the noise all around you, and tune into how you are feeling on all levels.

2. Practicing gentle yoga can help you to heal naturally.

Yoga works holistically on all levels, addressing physical, mental or emotional pain.

As you practice yoga and meditation you connect with and activate your central nervous system, your hormonal system and your body chemistry.

If you suffer with painful health conditions or if you have experienced any form of mental or emotional trauma, abuse, addictions, stress, fears or phobias, gentle yoga can be a very powerful, and effective healing tool.

3. Yoga can help you release stress.

Yoga teaches us that working with meditation and breathing exercises (called pranayama) can help control your body and quieten your mind.

In a gentle yoga practice, the focus on breathing consciously can help to release stress naturally.

Yoga really is for everyone.

With yoga, it really doesn’t matter what age you are or where you start from. As I always like to say to my students, ‘if you can breathe, you can do yoga!’

Practicing gentle yoga can help you to feel better, heal your body naturally and give you the strength and courage to create a life that you love.

TO ALL THE
KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!!

First, we survived
Being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank

While they were
Pregnant.

They took aspirin,
Ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then, after that
Trauma, we were

Put to sleep
On our tummies

In baby cribs
Covered

With bright colored
Lead-based paints.

We had no
Childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,

And, when we
Rode our bikes,

We had baseball
Caps,

Not helmets, on
Our heads.

As infants and
Children, we would ride in cars with no ca r seats, no booster seats, no seat belts,
No air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..

Riding in the
Back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water
From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one
Soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes,
White bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And we weren't overweight.

WHY?

Because we were
Always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave
Home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights
Came on.

No one was
Able to reach us all day.

--And, we were
OKAY.

We would spend
Hours building

Our go-carts out
Of scraps

And then ride
Them down the hill,

Only to find
Out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned
To solve the problem..

We did not
Have Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes. There were

No video games,
No 150 channels on cable,

No video movies
Or DVDs,

No surround-sound or
CDs,

No cell phones,
No personal computers,
No Internet and
No chat rooms.

WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went
Outside and found them!

We fell out
Of trees, got cut,

Broke bones and
Teeth,

And there were
No lawsuits

From those accidents.

We would get
Spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand,
And no one would call child services to report abuse.

We ate worms,
And mud pies

Made from dirt,
And

The worms did
Not live in us forever.

We were given
BB guns for our 10th birthda ys, 22 rifles for our 12th, rode horses, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and

-although we were
Told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes
Or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had
Tryouts

And not everyone
Made the team.

Those who didn't
Had to learn

To deal with
Disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing
us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have
Produced some of the best risk-takers,

Problem solvers, and
Inventors ever.

The past 50
To 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas..

We had freedom,
Failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are
One of those born

Between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want
to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers
and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are
at it, forward it to your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents
were.

Kind of makes
you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

~~~~~~~
The quote of
the month
by
Jay Leno:
"With hurricanes, tornados,
fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the
country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist
attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"
For those that
prefer to think that God is not watching over us...go ahead and delete this..
For the rest
of us.....
Don't You Feel Better When You Spend Time Outside?
Gardening is beneficial for arthritis and stroke recovery, as it encourages you to use the parts of the body that were affected. It is also useful for people who have social disabilities, and it can boost the mood as well as the cognition of people suffering from dementia. Its overall impact on well-being has caused some doctors to start prescribing horticultural therapy to patients who are recovering from illness or are dealing with anxiety or depression. The fresh air plays a big role, and the focus on plants and weeds takes people's minds off their pain.
Our screened in porch needs a makeover. We are choosing to have cathedral ceilings and sprucing up the floors. There are so many options out there. We are going to have fun doing this project.
 Love the hats!
Treat Day
School is starting Wednesday! Can you believe it? Way too early, and not much of a summer with all this rain that we have had in South Central KY. I figure the boys and I would celebrate our last couple of days with Krispy Kreme Donuts. They are the boys favorite.
Egg-Orange Skin Firming & Tightening Mask Eggs are rich in protein, which is great for nourishing the body, but also the skin. They are a perfect solution for treating acne, fine lines along with the wrinkles and dull skin. All you need to do is combine 1 egg white with 3 tbsp of fresh orange juice, to apply a layer of the mixture with the help of a brush. After 5 minutes, apply another layer of the mixture and leave it to dry completely. Remove the mask with a damp cotton pad in an upward direction. It will not just only remove the oil from the pores, but also the other debris that cause breakouts along with blackheads and whiteheads while making the skin tight. Thus, leaving a healthy glow on the face by diminishing the look of fine lines instantly. It can be considered as equivalently efficient as one of the best anti aging treatment for women of all ages available in the market today.
Molting
Shorter days and cooler temperatures... For people, its a sign that it is back to school time and fall. To chickens, its a sign that it is time to renew their feathers. Losing feathers and re-growing them is called molting and occurs every year when the days get shorter. During molt, chickens typically stop laying eggs and use that time to build up their nutrient reserves. Reduce stress as much as possible. Both roosters and hens go through molt. So don't panic when your chickens start losing their feathers and stop laying eggs.
shockingly simple skills that today’s pathetic Millennials have no idea how to do.
#1) Plant a seed in dirt and grow an edible plant.
#2) Change a bicycle tire.
#3) Sharpen a pencil.
#4) Identify the name of any tree or bird in the real world.
#5) Check the oil level in any engine.
#10) Strike a punching bag without injuring their frail, fragile wrists.
#11) Repair a broken garden hose without throwing it away and buying a new hose.
#12) Stop bleeding with a tourniquet.
#13) Cut a piece of wood in a straight line using a hand saw.
#14) Carry a 50 lb. bag of animal feed on their shoulder for 50 meters.
#15) Cook a real meal that isn’t “instant” or microwaveable.
#16) Start a camp fire, even with a lighter.
#17) Sharpen a knife, even using a knife sharpener.
#18) Build a shelter in the forest by using only forest materials.
And for advanced skills, Millennials have absolutely no idea how to do any of the following:
#27) Catch a fish.
#28) Clean a pistol.
#29) Swap out the hydraulic hose on a piece of farm equipment.
#30) Intelligently read any food label.
