They're In!

O'my goodness. David got tons of stings because he thought he could go out to the hive, dump the bees, syrup can and all and that would be it. It's kind of funny. David is his own person and just doesn't listen too well.
I suited up and followed the steps:
Remove the shipping lid from top of syrup can and Queen cage.
Remove syrup can.
Remove Queen cage.
Shake bees into hive. They wouldn't all go in so I just sat the cage in front of the hive and after 2 hours they were safe and sound. In their cribs.
Carefully replace the frames with the queen cage in the middle with her attendants.
The worker bees will eat the sugar plug to get her out and then the fun begins.
I will have to wait a week before I check them again. They have to accept her as their Queen and can not be disturbed. Otherwise they will kill her. Rough bunch!
David wouldn't let me take pictures of his stings, but maybe next time he will listen to me. Slow and easy does it.
Anyway, it was a profitable day. Looking forward to next Saturday to check on my girls.
Have a great weekend.

Expecting My Bees

Remember the feeling when you were expecting your first baby...running around cleaning the house, setting up the nursery, displaying all the cute stuffed animals you received from your baby shower, painting the crib, clean, clean, clean, arrange, arrange, arrange, then rearrange, range, range? For weeks or months the reality of having a baby keeps you awake at night thinking about everything from what the baby is going to look like, who the baby is going to look like, will it be a boy? a girl? The excitement of the unknown, a bit nervous, anxious, butterflies in your stomach...well, I feel this all over again except I'm expecting a shipment of approximately 20,000 bees!

Their new cribs are installed and in the back yard ready and waiting. Tomorrow is the big day. We will be picking our bees up tomorrow morning at 8:30 sharp. Who knew that all worker bees were female?... then again, not surprised. They basically do all the cooking, cleaning, feeding the babies while foraging for food. There's only one Queen bee to a hive and she's the only one with the ability to reproduce. She also determines the gender of the eggs she lays...now, that's power! Finally, the drones, the males. They are known to be good for one thing... and one thing only... they mate with a virgin Queen and then they die! What a way to go... with a smile on their faces!
Stay tuned for tomorrow. Big day! Try to get some rest.

I Am On My Soap Box Again

No one has been able to explain to me why young men and women serve in the U.S. Military for 20 years, risking their lives protecting freedom, and only get 50% of their pay while politicians hold their political positions in the safe confines of the capital, protected by these same men and women, and receive full pay retirement after serving one term. It just does not make any sense.
Monday on Fox news they learned that the staffers of Congress family members are exempt from having to pay back student loans. When you add this to the blow, jut where will it all stop?
Governors of 35 states have filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 of the 50 states to convene a Constitutional Convention.
This will take less than thirty seconds to read, and please pass it on.

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed, while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform... In all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop!

Proposed 28 Amendment to the United States Constitution:" Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives; and does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States.
This is one proposal that really should be passed around.

Keep Calm And Carry On

This is the time of year when birds are birding, flowers are blooming, and garden veggies are coming up. Not here, not this day. It has been raining so-ooooo much here, I feel like taking a vacation to (anywhere) that doesn't have rain in the forcast. When will it stop! The weather man is predicting rain for the next three days. Excuse me, I just heard rain through Thursday. Yikes! By the time my garden drys out, which will take it about a week, it will be raining again. I predict June, July and August dry as a bone.

Sorry about dumping on you, but this is rediculous. I do have some good news though. I am picking up my bees Saturday. I am a little nervous about it all. It's like being a new mother. Will I do everything right? We'll see. Just think 120,000 bees and two queens. What have I got myself into?

In this post I want to talk about Goldfinches. Finches visit the thistle feeder regularly, at least when it doesn't rain. The finches perch all over the fencing, putting their heads through and grabing thistle seeds from the mesh tube.I just bought a new finch feeder in Cincy, and I don't want to have the rain ruin it and get the seeds wet and moldy. Thistle seeds are costly, but definately worth every penny. This bird is definately a songster. I love its bright yellow plumage and wings of black. Grab your own thistle feeder and wait.

The "Crown Jewel" Of Bee Products

As science uncovers more and more of God's "secrets of nature" for the good of all mankind, people around the world are continuing to discover the health and beauty benefits of natural substances like those found in the Bee-Hive- and especially natures' greatest wonder, Royal Jelly!

Supposedly Princess Fergie used Royal Jelly as a fertility drug. Royal Jelly is a honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of larvae, as well as adult queens. That is why queens live to be three years old compared to worker bees who die after the first season.

Laundry Day And Other Things

It rained all day Monday, and Tuesday it was cold and windy, and the weatherman is calling for rain all weekend. What's a person to do? So today I am hanging my clothes out. I love the smell of freshly washed clothes being dried by the sun. It's just one of life's simple pleasures.

It's also that time of year when I begin to fidget. The perennial beds are bedraggled. The shrubs need pruning and so forth. Before you get your hands dirty, stroll around your yard, notebook in hand, to see which areas are sunny or shady. This walkabout will keep you from buying plants or seeds that won't grow under your garden's conditions-no matter what your fantasy is.

Your house isn't the only thing that needs spring cleaning. Instead of a mop and bucket, take a rake and pruning shears out doors. Do it today before this horrid weather comes to visit us again.

Every Body Has These Days!

Is the grass really greener? Where ever you go, you will take your own problems and insecurities with you. Running away isn't going to change you. Still though it is a nice fantasy at times. *sigh*
Stop for a moment today, and look at everything you are accomplishing and give yourself a pat on the back. Your doing a good job.

Our Trip To Cincinnati Ohio
Planning for the unexpected should be a part of any packing you do, but it is especially true when visiting Cincinnati. In the Queen City, everyone knows"if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it will change."
Brad had looked at the local forecast Friday morning before we arrived, and they were calling for a 40% chance for rain. David really wanted to put Meagan's breaks on her car, but hoping it wouldn't rain Saturday the guys would work on the basement Friday and breaks replaced on Saturday. It was spitting rain Friday, but warm so the guys got together and did a break job. We woke up Saturday morning to thunder and heavy rain. What can you expect in Cincy? The unexpected. Luckily with the rain, they found the leak in the basement, and now all is well. It was a great weekend for grilling out and good eats. We also did some shopping. I love, love , love Garden Ridge. It is a super store that carries just about anything your heart desires with good prices. A good time was had by all.

2008 Hummingbird Nest Documentary+'EVIL BLIPVERTS' SHOCKER!!

Always Important To Watch What Is Going On Behind The Scenes!

I am on my soap box again. Join me if you will. Little by little the subtle changes come until one day we will wake up and be the United Socialist States of America. 2012 is just around the corner so get and stay engaged as if our nation depended on it, because it does!!!

Well, how interesting! It seems the U.S. Department of Justice has changed its web site. Gone are the colorful red, white, and blue U.S. Flag decorations on the page, replaced by stark black and white. And at the top of the page, is a rather interesting quote: "The common law is the will of mankind, issuing from the life of the people." Catchy, huh? Why couldn't they find a quote from one of our Founding Father's. People, we have lost our Republic. This is an example of the slow, methodical misuse of power our current government is doing, as they lead us to socialism, and destroying our Nation as we have known it.

Get ready for 2012! Bring back our Nation as we have know it....

Hummingbirds
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are a common site during spring and summer in South Central KY. I put my feeder up around the 15th of April, and notice scouts in the area. After about two weeks I get a pair or two to start out. Hummingbirds are fascinating birds to watch.

Hummingbirds rely on nectar to provide them the energy they need to fly, to hover and to eat the insects that are their main source of protein. They obtain most of this nectar from flowers but are more than willing to have their nectar needs met from an appealing feeder. It is not necessary to add red food coloring to your syrup, and may actually be dangerous for the birds. I use 1 part sugar to three parts water. The color red attracts Hummingbirds, so your feeder should contain some red parts. Also red flowers will do the trick.

There is an old wives tale that says, put your feeder out at the first sound of a Hummingbirds"hum". When is that? Beats the heck out of me. I will stick with April 15th. Will keep you folks updated on my first sighting.

Chilling Out

Who is that in the bed? Why its Landen! Jennifer is off on spring break and Landen is staying with us. Jennifer called this morning with the weather forecast. You don't even want to know. Sunny and temps in the 80's. It is windy here and temps in the 50's, but the sun is shining. The problem is tar balls. All up and down the beach. Yuck! Another issue is gas. It cost them $200.00 just to go to Gulf Shores. I think I will just be happy with Landen and David just chilling out. If gasoline gets much higher, we will be spending our vacation in the backyard catching up on projects. That's right folks. Imagine with me the sun shining, temps in the upper 70's which means it is almost grilling time! Your eyes are looking at that big steak slowly cooking on the grill, you hear the sizzling, smell the great aroma, and make the first cut and see the juices flowing. You take the piece and put it into your mouth. The flavor is perfect and the juices max your taste buds. Hmmm--Hmmm, Good! Not bad for a day at home.
